Open source & licensing

Parts of focusmaxxing are built from other people's free software. Their licences ask that anyone who receives the finished apps can also read the source, change it and pass it on. This page is how that is kept: what each part is built from, who wrote it, which licence it is under, and where to get it.

The apps on your phone

Three of the four are forks — our own version of somebody else's program. Two of those are under a copyleft licence, which means our version carries the same licence and its source has to be public. It is.

Focusmaxxing (the app that holds your switches)

Our fork of SideStore, which is itself a fork of AltStore. Under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, the same licence SideStore uses. Our changes are the switches, the wait, the app list, the setup steps and the look; the signing, the pairing and the background renewal are SideStore's, unchanged.

Custom blocked Instagram

Built from SCInsta, an open-source modification of the Instagram app, under the GNU General Public License, version 3. Our part is the code that reads your switches and puts your custom block messages/media up. Because SCInsta is GPL-3, the app you install is too, and its complete source is in the repository below.

Custom blocked YouTube

YouTube has to keep its own name to sign in to Google, so it runs inside LiveContainer, an open-source shell that runs one app under its real name. LiveContainer is under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, so our patched copy of it is too, and the patch is in the repository below.

Theos is the toolkit both custom apps are built with, Instagram as well as YouTube, and parts of it end up inside them.

Focusmaxxing Setup (the computer step)

A trimmed fork of iloader, under the MIT licence. The phone, Apple and signing code is iloader's; we removed most of its toolbox, rebuilt the screen and added one check. The iloader name and logo are not used, which iloader's own branding notice asks for.

The helper

The VPN helper focusmaxxing asks you to install is LocalDevVPN by jkcoxson, a separate free app on Apple's App Store. It is not ours, it is not part of anything here, and it keeps its own name and icon. We only ask it to switch itself on.

The extension and the Windows app

The Chrome extension and the Windows app are our own code. They are not open source, and nothing in them is under a licence that asks them to be. What they are built with:

FFmpeg is used unmodified, as a separate program the app runs; it is not linked into anything. Its own source is at ffmpeg.org/download.html.

Fonts and smaller pieces

The adult-websites block on the phone points it at Cloudflare's family resolver. No code of theirs is shipped and nothing is sent to us; the phone does the lookup itself.

How to get the source

Everything under the GPL or the AGPL above is published, in full, in these two repositories. Each release on them is the exact code the matching app was built from, and the build that produced it is public too, so you can see it happen and run it yourself:

If you would rather have it another way, or you want the source for a version that is no longer the newest one, ask and we will send it to you — for at least three years after that version was last given out, at no more than what it costs us to send it. That offer is good for anyone who has the software, not only for customers.

The full text of each licence is in the repository it belongs to: AGPL-3.0, GPL-3.0, and MIT. Every copyright notice in the original code is kept where it was.

Who we are not

focusmaxxing is not connected with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple, Google, Meta, Instagram, YouTube, Discord, TikTok, Reddit, Roblox, X, Cloudflare, or any of the projects listed on this page. Their names are used only to say which app or service something works with. All trademarks belong to whoever owns them.

The people whose free software this is built on did not make focusmaxxing and are not responsible for it. Bugs in focusmaxxing are ours; please report them to us, not to them.
